What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
AEO is the practice of structuring content, websites, and brand authority so answer engines can find, understand, and accurately surface a company.

The short answer
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of improving content, website structure, and brand authority so information can be accurately discovered, understood, and surfaced by answer engines and AI-powered search experiences.
Answer engines include AI-driven search products such as ChatGPT search, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, and Perplexity. Rather than returning a ranked list of links, these systems generate a synthesized response, often naming a small number of companies, products, or sources directly inside the answer.
What AEO is
AEO treats the answer itself, not the search results page, as the unit that matters. A user asking "what is the best mortgage lender for self-employed borrowers" is not shown ten blue links to evaluate; they are shown a generated answer that may cite two or three sources and name a handful of companies. AEO is the discipline of making sure a company's information is accurate, well-structured, and authoritative enough to be part of that answer.
This is a genuinely new practice area, not a rebrand of content marketing. It requires thinking about how systems retrieve information, how they judge which sources to trust, and how they extract facts about entities such as companies, products, and people.
How AEO works
Most answer engines combine retrieval with generation. The system interprets a question, issues one or more searches (Google describes this as query fan-out), retrieves candidate pages, and generates a response grounded in that material. OpenAI has described a similar process for ChatGPT search, where a prompt may be rewritten into more specific queries before results are retrieved.
For a page to influence that generated answer, it generally needs to be crawlable and indexable, clearly written around a specific question, supported by accurate and consistent facts, and corroborated by independent sources. AEO work spans technical access, content structure, entity clarity, and off-site authority.
- Technical access: pages must be crawlable, indexable, and fast enough to be retrieved.
- Content structure: headings and sections should map to real questions, with direct answers stated plainly.
- Entity clarity: the company, its products, service area, and claims should be described consistently across the site.
- Authority: independent sources — press, directories, reviews, industry publications — should describe the company accurately.
Why AEO matters
A growing share of research, including mortgage and financial product research, now happens inside conversational tools rather than traditional search. If a company is absent from a generated answer, a prospective customer may never encounter it while building a shortlist. If the company appears but is described inaccurately — wrong service area, outdated rate information, an unclear qualification requirement — that inaccuracy can shape a high-consideration decision before a visitor ever reaches the website.
SEO tells you where your pages rank. AEO is concerned with something narrower and more consequential: whether your brand is part of the answer at all.
AEO vs SEO
AEO and SEO overlap substantially rather than competing. Technical fundamentals — crawlability, page speed, indexing, structured data — matter to both. What differs is the objective and the unit of success: SEO is oriented around ranking positions and organic traffic to a page; AEO is oriented around whether a brand is mentioned, cited, or recommended inside a generated answer.
| Dimension | SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| Objective | Rank pages higher in search results | Be included and accurately represented in generated answers |
| Primary unit | Keywords and search queries | Questions and prompts |
| Success measure | Rankings and organic traffic | Mentions, citations, and recommendation accuracy |
| Content structure | Optimized for search intent and on-page signals | Optimized for direct, extractable answers |
| Authority signal | Backlinks and domain authority | Third-party corroboration and entity consistency |
AEO vs GEO
AEO and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) are closely related terms that different parts of the industry use somewhat differently. In practice, AEO is often used for the broader discipline of optimizing for answer-based search experiences, while GEO — a term introduced in academic research (arXiv 2311.09735) — refers more specifically to optimizing content to be favorably cited within generative AI outputs.
There is no universal industry agreement on these definitions yet, and companies should not get overly attached to the labels. What matters is the underlying work: making a brand's information easy for AI systems to find, trust, and cite accurately. Read the dedicated comparison in AEO vs GEO for a full breakdown.
Content optimization, entity clarity, and structured data
Practical AEO work starts with content that answers real customer questions directly, in plain language, near the top of the page. It continues with entity clarity: consistent naming, consistent service-area claims, and consistent product descriptions across the website, directories, and press mentions. Schema.org markup (Organization, Product, FAQPage, Article) does not guarantee inclusion in an AI answer, but it helps systems parse facts about a page unambiguously.
Authority and citations matter because generative systems weigh corroboration. A claim repeated only on a company's own homepage carries less evidential weight than the same claim appearing in a reputable trade publication, a regulator's data, or a well-sourced review.
Measurement and common questions
AEO cannot be measured with a single proprietary score. A defensible approach tests a fixed set of prompts across platforms on a recurring schedule, and tracks citation frequency, mention accuracy, and share of relevant answers in which the brand appears. This is the foundation of an LLM Visibility Audit.
Common early questions include whether AEO makes SEO unnecessary (it does not), whether any vendor can guarantee inclusion in ChatGPT (no credible one can), and how long visibility improvements take to show up (results depend on how often a platform's index and model are refreshed, which is outside any single company's control).
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO a replacement for SEO?
No. AEO builds on the same technical and content fundamentals as SEO and adds a focus on how answer engines retrieve, synthesize, and cite information.
Can a company guarantee it will be cited by ChatGPT?
No credible method guarantees inclusion in any AI system's generated answers. AEO work improves the odds of accurate, relevant visibility; it cannot control a third-party model's output.
Does structured data guarantee AI visibility?
No. Structured data such as Schema.org markup helps systems parse a page's facts more reliably, but it is one input among many, not a guarantee of citation.
How is AEO different from GEO?
The terms overlap and the industry has not settled on strict definitions. AEO is commonly used for the broader answer-engine discipline; GEO, from academic research, focuses more narrowly on optimizing content for generative citation.
How often should AEO work be reviewed?
On a recurring cadence tied to how quickly your market, products, and regulatory requirements change, since answer engines can surface outdated or inaccurate information if a site is not kept current.
Where should a company start with AEO?
With a bounded LLM Visibility Audit that tests real customer questions across major AI platforms, then prioritizes the technical and content gaps that surfaced.
