AEO vs SEO: What's the Difference?
AEO and SEO overlap rather than compete: SEO optimizes for search rankings, AEO optimizes for accurate inclusion in AI-generated answers.

The short answer
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the practice of improving a website so it ranks well in traditional search results. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the practice of improving content and authority so a brand is accurately included, cited, or recommended inside AI-generated answers. The two are complementary, not competing: AEO depends on many of the same technical and content foundations SEO already established.
They overlap more than they diverge
It has become common to hear that "SEO is dead" now that AI answers exist. That is not an accurate framing. Answer engines still need to crawl and index pages before they can retrieve them; they still evaluate authority signals that trace back to backlinks and reputation; and they still reward clearly structured, genuinely useful content. A site with poor SEO fundamentals — slow pages, blocked crawlers, thin content — will struggle to appear in AI answers for the same reasons it struggles to rank in traditional search.
What AEO adds is a new layer of thinking about the unit of success. SEO has historically optimized for a ranking position on a results page that a human then chooses to click. AEO optimizes for something further downstream: whether an AI system synthesizes your company's information directly into the answer it gives a user, sometimes without that user ever visiting a website.
Where the disciplines diverge
The clearest differences show up in objective, content shape, and measurement.
| Dimension | SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| Objective | Rank a page as high as possible for target keywords | Be accurately mentioned or cited in a generated answer |
| Search experience | List of ranked links the user evaluates | Synthesized answer the user reads directly |
| Primary unit | Keywords | Prompts and natural-language questions |
| Success signal | Rankings, impressions, click-through rate | Mentions, citations, recommendation accuracy |
| Traffic model | Click-driven traffic to the ranked page | Answer-driven awareness, sometimes with no click at all |
| Content structure | Keyword-aligned pages targeting search intent | Direct, extractable answers near the top of the page |
| Authority signal | Backlink profile and domain authority | Third-party corroboration and consistent entity facts |
| Measurement | Rank tracking and analytics | Prompt testing across AI platforms over time |
Objective and search experience
SEO's objective is visibility on a results page: appearing in position one instead of position eight materially changes click-through. AEO's objective is different in kind: an AI system may only name two or three companies in an entire answer, and there is no visible ranking position to track. Being "included" or "not included" is closer to the relevant distinction than being ranked first or fifth.
Keywords vs prompts
SEO content is traditionally built around keyword research — the specific terms people type into a search box. AEO content is built around the actual questions people ask conversationally: "can a self-employed borrower qualify for a conventional mortgage" rather than "self-employed mortgage requirements." These are related but not identical inputs, and AEO content planning typically starts from real customer questions rather than a keyword list.
Rankings and traffic vs mentions and citations
SEO success is measurable in rankings and sessions. AEO success is measurable in whether a brand is mentioned by name, whether it is cited as a source with a link, and whether the description given is accurate. These are different metrics that require different tracking methods — typically repeated prompt testing across ChatGPT, Google's AI features, Copilot, and other platforms rather than a rank tracker.
Why companies need both
Treating AEO as a replacement for SEO, or vice versa, misunderstands how modern search actually works. SEO fundamentals remain the foundation an AI system relies on to find and trust a page in the first place. AEO is the layer built on top of that foundation, focused specifically on how a brand is represented once an AI system starts generating an answer instead of just listing links. Companies that need visibility across both traditional and AI-driven search should plan for both disciplines together rather than in sequence.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is SEO becoming obsolete because of AEO?
No. Answer engines still rely on crawling, indexing, and authority signals that SEO produces. AEO adds a layer focused on generated answers rather than replacing the underlying discipline.
Can a page be optimized for both SEO and AEO at once?
Yes, and in most cases it should be. Strong technical SEO and clear, direct, answer-first content serve both search rankings and AI-generated answers.
Does ranking #1 in Google guarantee inclusion in an AI Overview or ChatGPT answer?
No. Ranking position and inclusion in a generated answer are related but distinct outcomes, and a top-ranking page is not automatically cited or mentioned.
How do you measure AEO performance if there is no ranking position?
By repeatedly testing a defined set of real customer prompts across AI platforms and tracking mention frequency, citation frequency, and description accuracy over time.
Do backlinks still matter for AEO?
Yes. Backlinks remain a component of authority, but AEO also weighs how consistently independent sources describe the same company facts, not just link volume.
Should a company hire separate SEO and AEO teams?
Not necessarily. The disciplines share enough foundation that most organizations are better served by one team or partner that understands both.
